    Kate has a cold

I have to say that this whole notion that young children shouldn't be given cold medications just irks me to no end. I understand that some people have given incorrect doses to their children causing serious safety concerns, and that's a totally legitmate issue, but this argument that the medicines don't have any impact on the duration of a cold just completely misses the point. When I have a cold I don't take medicine because I think it will shorten the cold - I take the medicine because I feel like crap, and I know that if my congestion is relieved my head won't hurt so much, if I'm not coughing constantly I'll be able to sleep, if my throat doesn't hurt as much I'll have a better day, etc. Why do we not think the same applies to our kids? They feel like crap and providing relief to them for their symptoms seems beyond reasonable. Why should my sweet little girl have to whimper in her sleep because she feels so crummy? Luckily I was able to find some pre-recall decongestant to give her - hopefully it will help and we can both get some sleep tonight. I know I'm in for a long one - Mommy's magical bed has been put into play, and I hate to hear her doing so badly so I know I'll be sleeping lightly as I worry about her.

we're missing cold meds severely here, too. Our house has never been hit so hard by a cold bug and I swear, if I could just keep the kids somewhat comfortable so they could sleep then I might get some sleep too. They'd have a chance at recovery and I'm improve my ability to hold on to that last thread of sanity that is trying to disappear with the new year. Here's hoping Kate is better soon. I think the older two are making the turn towards health here so I'm hopeful the rest of us will soon follow.

I hope Kate feels better! All this conflicting information is a huge pain. I gave Evan cold medication as a baby and a toddler (pre recall) and I honestly don't think he's any worse off for it.

Hope you guys are able to get some sleep :)

It is frustrating. I just hope it is short-lived for the little miss.

Don't they just sound so pitiful when the little ones are sick? I'd give her something...at minimum Tylenol every 4 hours. They go so far back and forth - give the kids this, oh wait no, do this. Drives me nuts. Hope she feels better soon!!! She is such a little cutie!

I hear ya! I will say that most of the time those things never helped Elijah, but if they help, sigh... They have put Benedryl back out for the kiddos, that might help a little? My doctor advised against humidifiers unless they have a filter. He suggested a vaporizer because they kill more germs in the air with the heat. We also live by sailine up the nose...
I hope she feels better. And mom gets some sleep too!

I absolutely agree with you Megan!! I guess the problem comes in is that children's bodies don't process certain medications inside cold medications the same way adults do and that because it can't be processed correctly it is harmful. Yet, my doctor allows me to take all forms of Tylanol (including flu and cold) and I'm PREGNANT and somehow this is not an issue?!?! It seems to be a bunch of mixed bull to me.

I still give Maddy cold medication at night to ward off the symptoms. My kiddo deserves relief. Yes, I use a humidifier too, elevating her head, giving her hot herbal tea...etc... but I use the meds, too.
