a great weekend

Our weather is beautiful, and it was so nice to see my dad and Linda. They got into town around 11:30 yesterday and left at 11 today, so it was a quick turnaround event for them. Yesterday Claire's family came over, and we all had a nice lunch and chatted. We went to a local nursery afterward to get some pumpkins and as it turned out, play on their moon bounce and other slides/mazes/etc. The girls had a great time, and even Kate enjoyed the moon bounce once there wasn't anyone actually bouncing in it. We were the only people there, and it a lot of fun. We got ice cream afterward, and then we split up with my dad and Linda so that they could check into their hotel. Kate, Molly, and John all took naps, Anna watched tv, and Claire, Jay, and I watched the US vs. Brazil WWC game from Thursday. We met up with my dad at 6 and went to Red Robin for dinner, then we came back to our house and had a quick little bday celebration for Kate. She loved her cupcake! I got a little teary as we sang "Happy Birthday" to her - she's getting so old, so fast. This morning my dad and Linda joined all of us for bagels before they hit the road. It was really nice to see them, even though it was a short visit.

In about an hour Jay's friend Tim (from Cornell) and his fiancee are coming over to watch football and hang out. I'm making dinner, and I think it'll be a nice afternoon. Kate's on a weird schedule today because she was up until 8:30 last night - right now she's fighting going down for her nap that normally starts by 1pm. Oh well.

OK, just wanted to write something quick. I figure that it's better to write more frequent, shorter posts than never at all...

so LAME!

Man, I don't think we could have a worse set of photos of Kate. Sheesh. It was all her fault, too - it had nothing to do with the photographer or the studio, she just was a total pain in the neck. She had just napped and wasn't hungry, so I thought that it was going to go great. Wrong! Oh well, at least I didn't have to pay for it at all. We submitted a photo to the contest, although in retrospect I should have just submitted one of our own - we have some that are far cuter. Not model material today, anyway...

Friday randomness

Kate is having quite a fun day today. This morning she had a swimming lesson (she did a great job) and this afternoon she's getting her picture taken. The Picture People is sponsoring a contest for YoBaby for the next set of cover babies, and I figured, why not? Besides, it's perfect timing to get a photo of her at a year old - only 9 days away!! Augh!! Anyway, I bought this darling dress for her birthday, so it's going to get its first use in her photo today. I've been looking all over for her tights; it's not exactly an easy thing to dig through her wardrobe while she's asleep in the room...I'll find them...

Last night a group of moms from our group came over, and it was so much fun. Everyone brought food for dinner, and it was SO yummy! I made bruschetta, a dip with crackers (which didn't get eaten but by now is nearly gone), and a berry shortcake. We ate dinner, chatted, looked at photos, and then watched Grey's Anatomy - yay, it's back! It was a nice evening, but another late one for me. I begged Claire to take today off from our workout because I've just been so exhausted all week from staying up late and getting up early. I got up this morning with Kate but Jay quickly took over and sent me back to bed. I slept until 9...ah, just what I needed. Claire came over a little later and did her own workout; I thought that was pretty impressive. Personally, it's just a day off for me. Wink

Yesterday I went to a job fair in Arlington. It was probably not really worth my time; I left my resume with only one company, and they are in Silver Spring - far, far from Ashburn. So even if they were interested in me I'd be hard pressed to take that position. I applied for a few other jobs this week online, and I have a bunch more to do. I'm just going to keep plugging away at it. There's another job fair on Tuesday closer to home, and I'm going to look for events in the Gaithersburg area since there are so many biotech companies over there. Someday I'll have a job. I'd like to think that would be someday soon, but who knows...

OK, I have to go get myself ready to go to the mall (that swimming pool did a number on my hair!) and pull together everything I need for Kate. Have a good weekend!

learning to walk

Kate's quite a ways away from walking on her own, I think, unless she makes serious strides (that's a bad pun, I know) soon. She has, however, become quite proficient using the push walker that Claire gave us. At first (last week) she'd just take a step or two, but on Saturday she suddenly started to cross the room, and now she'll go back and forth as many times as she can - as long as we're there to get her off of the wall and turned around. Two doors down from us is a little girl that is 5 days younger than Kate, and she's walking. Her mom has been taking her out into the cul-de-sac with her older child, and Lily just pushes her walker all over the place. So yesterday I followed suit, and Kate had a blast. She could walk and walk and walk...all the way across the circle (we live at the end of it) and back again. Very cute. She only has soft soled leather shoes for now, so real shoes are on the shopping horizon. a little later...I checked the supply of passed down shoes and found a pair of darling size 3 sandals that are just about big enough for Kate (darn that I didn't look earlier in the summer! They're darling!). I put them on her and she was mighty preoccupied with them. Pretty funny. Oh, and she keeps her toes all curled up for now until her balance is better, and it was pretty funny to see that in sandals. She's so cute.

Saturday morning

Claire and I walked this morning, and ugh, it was humid out. I got home and closed up the house and turned on the AC just long enough to get rid of the stickiness. Blech!

Kate seems to be feeling much better. The last two days have been very pleasant without the nearly constant whininess and clinginess that we've been dealing with recently, so that's been a nice change. Her little teeth are getting tiny bits bigger everyday, and I think she's wondering what's going on in her mouth. Her fingers are still in there a lot, but she's often pulling her nail across the teeth. I think that, because she's pretty old to be getting her first teeth, she's much more aware of what is 'normal' in her life, and changes are quickly noticed - a 6 month old wouldn't have the same reaction. Anyway, her teeth a cute, and I can't wait until they're poked up a little more.

We haven't done too much the last couple of days. Thursday we were home all day and had a quick trip to the playground with Jay before bedtime. Yesterday we went to her swimming lesson, but that was all. The lesson was cute. Kate was so excited to be in the water, and since she loves to be around other kids, she was just as happy as could be. Toward the end of the lesson she was starting to lose it because she was hungry; the lesson runs from 11-11:30, and she generally eats ~11:20 or so. We had given her a snack in the car on the way there because I was expecting this issue, but apparently it wasn't enough. Next week I'll give her more to eat for breakfast and a larger snack in the car. Anyway, it was super cute to see the babies in the water. The class is for 6-18mo olds, but there were at least 3 other young kids. All so cute in their bathing suits, splashing around.

Today we have a few plans, but we'll see how it all plays out. Jay plays tennis every Saturday morning with a group of guys; he's out of the house from 9-12:30. I really wish it was earlier because half the day is over by the time he's home. Oh well, it's fun and good for him, and Kate and I are fine. Anyway, the plan was that today after he got cleaned up we'd go on a little picnic. The problem is that Kate went down for a nap at 8! I'm not sure why she was so tired, she woke up only 10min earlier than normal, so that doesn't really explain it. So now it depends on what happens. Is she only sleeping for her normal 2 hours? Then she'll be up at 10 and back down for two hours by 12:30 - maybe I can eek her out until 1. Or maybe she needs an extra hour, in which case she'll be on her normal up at 11, down at 1:15, 1:30 routine. Anyway, it's hard to plan when the normal routine is suddenly not being used! Claire and I are going to a home show nearby - I always want to go to home shows but can't ever really justify the ticket price since we're renting, but Claire is looking to do some small remodeling/redecorating, so now I have a buddy to tag along with! I think we'll head to the show around 4.

Alright, I'm feeling like this was a really boring post, so I'll spare you all from more of my blather. Have a nice day!

so very tired

Man, I'm pooped. I think I'm going to hit the sack in just a bit, here. I stayed up too late knitting last night, and these 6am appointments with Claire really take their toll. Wink Tomorrow morning, FitTV for the first time - Claire forgot to turn on her alarm for yesterday morning's session, and although I was up I wasn't motivated enough to work out alone. Lame, I know.

Kate had quite a day today. For some reason she is only sleeping for one hour as her morning nap more and more. I wanted to make this trip (more below), so I packed her into the car for a couple of hours. Yesterday her first nap was an hour, she was up for an hour, then down for 2 more, but since we were in the car today she didn't make up for her morning nap. Add to that the fact that she had to nap in the car on the way home, and she was unhappy - she only slept for an hour this afternoon, most of that in our garage. At 5:00 she was eating dinner and I look over, and she's just totally zoning out. She was so pooped! Two hours of naps vs. the normal four...she soon started rubbing her eyes like crazy, and Jay took her upstairs to get her pjs on so that we'd be ready when she crashed - I was hoping that she'd make it until 6. Well, all hell broke loose upstairs, she was just hysterical with Jay. Claire and the girls were over for dinner, so I brought her downstairs to see them - always a way to get her to smile - and she just started crying again. OK, then, into bed at 5:15. Hopefully she'll sleep until 6:45 like normal.

So, our trip. Gaithersburg, MD is a major biotech location, but it's a ways away from here, requiring a trip on the Beltway - I'm willing to do a long commute for now, but I won't get on the Beltway! Well, a friend of Jay's from college lives in Gaithersburg and told him about this little ferry that crosses the Potomac up here and connects us to Gaithersburg. From what he had said, it sounded like it would be ~45 min from here. Totally do-able! So, before I ramped up the job hunt I wanted to check out the ferry and the drive, which turns out to be a solid hour from here. That's longer than I'd prefer, but there's a reason we're only renting right now - we didn't know where I'd find a job. I think I could stomach the commute if I knew it was only for the short term; our lease is up at the end July '08, and we'll be buying a house to move into at that point, so if it needs to be closer to (or even in) Gaithersburg, well, that's an option. So, anyway, I'm feeling very motivated to really get into the job hunt now. I looked only briefly at one company up there today, and there were 3 postings that I'm going to apply for, all of which are right up my alley. So, maybe there will be some movement on that front, finally.

OK, this writing has sapped my energy. I'm off...
2007/9/18

it's been awhile

I don't know why I just can't seem to get into a groove with the blogging. Maybe it's because my computer is in the living room, a room that is empty save my desk and two bookcases - out of sight, out of mind. I have barely even been checking my email for the last few weeks...

OK, so first, you probably noticed the new album. I had been holding off on starting it until I had enough pictures, but I guess I had more than I realized. Anyway, in the album is a pic of Kate's gums and teeth. The photo actually is pretty good but I'm not sure that the uploaded version is clear enough to pick out the teeth - they are awfully little still. Kate is still struggling, at least a little bit, with them. She's just been a whole lot whinier for the last two weeks or so, and her eating is still pretty screwed up. I realized yesterday that she isn't eating cheese now, and that's a mainstay of her diet, so hopefully she'll get back to it once her mouth is feeling better. She won't even touch cubed cheese, poor kid, but she eats a little string cheese. Mostly she's eating fruit and sweet potato puffs. Sheesh.

Two things on the eating front. One, she's pretty much weaned herself at this point, without any effort on my part. Really, if I think about it, she was trying to wean in August, I think, but I was still trying to get her to nurse after her naps. She's only nursing in the morning when she wakes up, and the rest of the day we just go about our business. I'm loving not having to wear a nursing bra! I think losing the last feeding is going to be a bit challenging for two reasons. One, she's ravenous when she wakes up, so it's going to be hard to distract her while I get breakfast together. Two, I'm expecting to be in some pain for a couple of days once we're past the last nursing session. Right now I'm loving my very limited supply that has absolutely no discomfort associated with it. Anyway, I guess we have a couple more weeks of this little bit of nursing before we call it quits. Unfortnately Kate's milk intake is only ~3-5oz a day after her morning nursing session, and that's really inadequate (I've read that at a year babies should have 14oz a day). I'm doing everything I can think of to get her to take in more, but she's just not interested. That's part of the reason that she needs to get back on the cheese wagon...

The second thing about eating...I bought a couple of bananas last week thinking that she might like them now. She never liked them mashed - either alone or mixed in something else - although she did eat some jarred ones for a bit. So, yesterday I break off a chunk, probably ~3 inches. She grabs it from my hand and just shoves the end in her mouth. She demolished that banana - it was gone in less than a minute, I swear. It was so cute, too, to see her stuffing her little cheeks full. Pretty funny. I gave her some tonight while we were eating dinner, and she did it again. In less than two minutes, it was totally gone. It's really very funny - I should get some video of it.

OK, that's it for now. I'm off to knit - more on that later!

my little trooper

Poor Kate seems to be having a heck of a time with her teeth. I don't quite understand it because the teeth are showing, thus there is no more gum to cut through, but nonetheless, she has fingers in her mouth almost all the time and quite a unpleasant attitude. We're on day 3 or 4 of it, and I'm looking forward to getting bac to normal. I feel bad for her and have given her Tylenol a couple of times in the last few days. It's not really clear if it's having any impact or not.

All this not feeling well has pretty much zapped her appetite, and she really didn't eat much yesterday. On top of that, she went to bed at 6:20, so I fully expected her to wake up early this morning. She did; up at 5:50, which worked out ok. I nursed her and then put her in the jogging stroller to go on the walk with Claire and I (our 3rd one this week). Kate kept herself amused, and it all worked out great. She went down for her nap at 8 and slept until 11! Normally if she gets up that early she only is up for about an hour before crashing again, but I think since we were on the walk she was able to make it a little longer, but still needed to catch up on that hour of sleep she lost by getting up so early. So, while that was all well and good, her mom was a total idiot and forgot that today was the first day of her swimming lessons. The lessons start at 11, and at 10:55 Jay says to me, don't we need to leave? I was like, leave? where are we going? I just totally blanked about it, so I have a call in to see if we can attend tomorrow's lesson instead. Oh well. (Are you wondering why Jay didn't bring it up earlier when I was clearly planning my day of errands? I have no idea!) The lesson is only a half hour, so we would have missed at least 15 min of it if we left when he mentioned it, so hopefully tomorrow will work out ok.

So, after Kate got up we hustled out the door. I had a bunch of errands to run, including grocery shopping, so I had packed up Kate's lunch and we got going. We did a few things and then ate lunch at Wegmans before doing the serious shopping. She did such a good job! She was so happy and patient, and everyone was enamored by her today - some days noone even seems to notice my little darling, but today was not one of them! She was showing off and just being cuter than heck. As we were heading to the cashier I glanced at my watch and thought that it was 12:40 - perfect, she'll be down for her nap just a little later than normal. We got home and it was 2:00...uh, what happened? So, her nap was a lot later than normal after all, but you'd never have known that she was tired while we were out.

OK, that's all. I'm starving and have some prep to do for dinner...

bugland

My stomach is in knots, my heart is pounding, and I'm breathing heavy. I feel like I need a good, stiff drink, and I'm not a drinker. All I can say is eeewwwwww!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

First of all, I stumbled across the bug that was trapped in Jay's office. I last heard him make a noise Friday night, so by Sunday morning I was pretty sure he was dead. Somewhere in there...Of course I'm the one to find it! It's nice out, so I was in there opening his windows, and suddenly, there it was, laying on the floor. I think it must have been in the blinds, because one minute it wasn't there, and the next it was. Even though Claire kept telling me that it might not be a big bug, it sure was:

bug 001 bug 002

Ugh. That, though, wasn't the worst of it - at least that bug was dead! I was moving some things into the basement, and stumbled across a veritable bugland. Super UGH! First I moved our extra table leaf, and a large bug scurried out from its hiding place, taking me totally by surprise. It looked like a cricket, a big one. Luckily I had my handy dandy Dyson there, ready for use, so I sucked him up (and then vacuumed for a bit to make sure he was dead). Once I took care of the things I was organizing, it occurred to me that it might be worth scouring the place for unwanted bugs. I used the Dyson wand to suck up at least 15 spiders in various corners, and I removed every spec of web - cobweb or real - that I could find. The worst, though, was that I came across another huge bug; again, it looked like a freaking huge cricket. Luckily I spotted it from pretty far away, so I was able to sneak up on it. Here I am, feeling pretty much invincible with my trusty stronger-than-shit Dyson vacuum, and this huge bug is fighting the suction! HOLY SHIT! Once I know this thing is down there, there is no freakin' way it's going to remain there, so I have to win this battle. When it finally got sucked up I could feel it bumping down the hose. EEEWWWWW!!!!!!!!!!

I finished up vacuuming and figured that I needed to make sure these bugs were truly out of my house, so I emptied the vacuum canister into our pretty full kitchen garbage. I don't really want to see all the carcasses, but I kind of look...and there is that huge bug, WALKING!! Oh, good god...I started a mantra, just get it outside, just get it outside...I grabbed a twist tie and slowly walked the garbage can to the deck. I don't want to look at this huge, ugly, dust covered bug, but god forbid it jump out of the bag onto the play room floor! Once I got outside I started breathing again - whatever happened out there would be ok. I managed to slowly remove the bag and close it up, and then I ran it to our big outside can (I think I was muttering, holy shit, the entire way). GOOD RIDDANCE, STUPID BUGS!!! Man, extermination was not in my plan for the day!!

I'll tell you my lesson from all of this: Jay needs to do a thorough bug suck up once a week down there!

BIG developments!

Here she comes, the baby with teeth...Kate's right center bottom tooth is finally through the gum! I mentioned yesterday that I could see pure white, and today I can feel the edge of a tooth. Yay! I can't believe she's actually going to have teeth, finally! I'm so excited to find out what she's going to look like with teeth...hmmm...

The second thing that happened was actually more exciting. Our family room/play room is sunken by one step from the kitchen. Kate moves back and forth between the play room and the kitchen all day long. When we first moved in she did a couple of head first dives down the step into the family room before she learned that she needed to wait for me to help her down. Well, since then - what, a month and a half now - I've been showing her how to turn around and step down. I've turned her body, I've done it myself before turning her body, I've talked about it until I was blue in the face. No dice, the kid just sits and waits for me (better than head first dives). Today she was playing in the pantry, and a can of pop rolled away and off the step. She watched it, and then took off. I was reading the paper with my back to her, so I watched over my shoulder. She approached the step at high speed, and suddenly spun around. I actually thought she was going to go over the edge backward, and I made a little gasp. She briefly paused, and I thought that she was going to sit and wait for me, again. Nope! She kept on going, and then stretched her little leg over the step, and there she was, down in the play room. Yay!! She did it so easily that I've got to believe that it wasn't the first time she's made her move, it's just the first time I've seen it. She did it again later, from standing, using my leg for support. She's so cute!

pain...

I had my first soccer game on Sunday, and man, am I sore! Yesterday was bad enough, but I think today I'm feeling worse. Ouch. Every muscle in my body hurts, and to make matters worse I'm totally wiped out. I just slept for an hour and am feeling pretty groggy. Soccer itself went well - the team seems nice and they play at the perfect level for me. I did really well, and even though I'm totally out of shape I don't think anyone could tell. It's a co-ed team, and league rules say that you have to have 3 women on the field (out of 11 players, barely co-ed, in my book); there were 6 women there, so I played about half the game. Just right for my first outing. I think the team was happy with me; it seemed like a few of them were surprised, too. I can definitely hold my own on the field vs. man or woman, and I'm quick to the ball - I think all of that came through. The problem with playing with men is that you're always having to prove your value to them, but I think I did that just fine. Anyway, it felt great to be on the field, but it doesn't feel as great now. Ouch...

Claire and I have decided to be exercise partners in the mornings. We intend to walk a few days a week and do some strength training the other days. We're hoping that once we are in better shape we'll start swimming sometimes, too. I tried to convince her that we should sign up for some races next spring/summer, and I think she's on board. Exercise is just easier with a partner, at least until it's such a part of your daily routine that you don't think twice about it. I think we're both a long way from there! Anyway, she came over at 6 this morning and we walked around my neighborhood. It was so humid out, but it felt good. I was hoping that it might help me stretch out, but I'm still feeling about the same.

Kate's teeth are actually coming in! When she opens her mouth at the right angle you can see small slivers of white - there's no gum over them anymore. Now it's just a matter of when they'll really be visible. I couldn't get a good picture right now, but I'll be sure to take one when the teeth are more evident.

Kate has become a blabbermouth in the last few days. She's been pretty quiet from day one, but no longer! She's constantly jabbering about something, and she's making so many new letter sounds. It's so cute! She's been pointing at everything in sight for a couple of weeks, and now she points and says stuff, too. We spend our days naming things that she points at, and it seems like maybe it's had an impact on her. It definitely is starting to feel like she is trying to actually talk rather than just make sound, and that's pretty fun. Everyday Jay and I comment to each other about how big she's gotten. She's starting to leave the baby thing behind as she heads for little girl land. Oh man, and her hair is out of control! It has gotten so long. It is totally wild, and I fight with it everyday to get it out of her face in some cute manner. The back and sides are pretty wavy, but the hair on top of her head is stick straight. It's still pretty red, although the hair that's growing in on the back of her head is more blond. We're all thinking that she may end up strawberry blond; it seems like the red is here to stay because her eyelashes and eyebrows are so red. We won't be cutting her hair anytime soon, but it's definitely turning into a mane!

OK, that's it for now. I have a few things to do before she gets up...
2007/9/7

it's official!

Kate is 11 months old today, and...she still has NO TEETH!!!! Never in a million years did I think she'd be this late in getting them. It's just so funny, but what the heck is going on?? I'm not actually worried about it, but it is a little ridiculous. As Allison reminded me, though, once they have teeth they can bite. I guess that won't be an issue for me with nursing ever, either - there's no way that in 4 weeks she could have enough teeth to cause me any pain. That's a side benefit, I guess. As my mom says, the girl is going to talk before she gets teeth! Sheesh. Really, I know I keep saying it, but the bottom two teeth are right there - huge bumps in front and on top of her gum. Apparently she has gums of steel or something. *lol* And, have I mentioned that there is absolutely no sign of anything anywhere else in her mouth?? People kept saying that she'd get a bunch at once, but I don't know about that. At the rate these first two have been moving, it'll be months before the top two come in. *shaking head*

I thought that, in honor of her almost-one-year-old status, I'd tell a funny story that I've been meaning to share. One day while we were visiting Pat and Duane two weeks ago Kate was a silly, silly girl. I had put her down for her afternoon nap without issue, but she started babbling and playing within a few minutes. She doesn't do that very much - she generally just goes to sleep - but it does happen occasionally. My rule of thumb is that if 20min go by and she's still up then I go check on her; her diaper is nearly always the problem. So, that day I went up after 20min, and before I opened the door all the way I peeked in. There was Kate, standing in her pack-n-play...pantless! Her pants were on the ground outside of her bed:pants off!

What a silly girl! I snuck back downstairs before she saw me to grab the camera. When I opened the door she was laughing hysterically, just having a grand time. Her pants were a mess - one leg was totally bunched up while the other one had obviously just been pulled right off. These pants are loose in the leg and the waist (she was in a disposable diaper), so I guess she just grabbed hold and pulled. She's never played with her pants before or since.

So, that day, it wasn't her diaper, just her antics that were keeping her awake. Isn't she so cute? smile_regular

2007/9/6

continuing saga...

OK, first of all, the smoke alarm question. We just replaced the battery in the smoke alarm that is right outside of the kitchen, and it was actually my first concern (once I knew there wasn't a fire per se) - that the alarm would go off and wake Kate, and then I'd have to deal with her and the issue in the kitchen (Jay is in Seattle, if you didn't gather that), so I quickly closed the doors between the kitchen and the alarm. Hopefully that explains it, although it might also be that the haze wasn't as dense as true smoke is? My understanding of the alarms is that they sense when the air around them isn't clear anymore. Anyway, I know the alarm works because I just tested it last weekend.

So, here's the "funny" continuation of my story. Last night, like I said, I threw open all of the windows to clear the place out. We have a door out of the family room that opens onto the deck. It opens into the room and there is a sliding screen door on it. Earlier in the evening Claire and the girls were here for dinner, and we all played in the backyard for a bit. OK, there's the background. Later, while I'm in the kitchen washing all of my dishes from my Kate cooking, I'm seeing all these bugs flying around - in particular, there's one that isn't very large but is dense, if you know what I mean. It's got serious buzzing going on from it's wings and it's smacking the heck out of the overhead light. I assumed it was a beetle of some sort (it was moving so quickly that I couldn't get a good look at it) and prayed it would find a way into the light and die. *lol* A bunch of our screens have tears in the them, and the screen on the sliding screen door is separated from the frame along one whole side. So, I figured that's where the bugs came from, the persistent things that they are. I decide to close everything up - I was going to head to bed soon anyway. I go to shut the door in the family room and realize that the screen door is wide open!!! We must have forgotten (or not bothered) to shut it when we came in earlier, because with the A/C on the door itself was closed. Luckily there weren't any lights on in the family room near the door or my house would have be swarming with bugs.

Cut to tonight. Everyone is asleep upstairs (I'm babysitting for Claire while she babysits for someone else...), and I'm drinking my coffee while reading the paper. All is quiet. Suddenly, I hear the distinct sound of some kind of Virginia insect - INSIDE MY HOUSE! Oh man...I'm not really afraid of bugs (after all, I spent 6 years looking at fruit flies under the microscope), but I don't really like them either (save for the darling fruit fly). The bugs here in VA are simply freaky. There are tons of them, some of which are very big, and I don't really know what they all are. Very disconcerting. Apparently ONE OF THEM IS IN MY HOUSE!!!!!!!! *cringe* My ears had localized it to the front of the house, probably the living room. Great, that's where my computer is. It took a while, but I did venture into the room to go online. I have this sense that I don't have a freaking shot in hell at finding this unknown intruder, but I did give the room a quick once over. The room is mostly empty (my desk and two bookshelves), so that is helpful. (Although my knitting is in here - wouldn't that be GROSS if it was in my yarn?!?) Well, since I've been sitting at my desk, the bug has made more noise, and I now know that it, most certainly, is in Jay's office. That room is quite definitely not empty. In fact, in an attempt to organize it last weekend he spread everything out on the floor and then ran out of time before leaving town. There are a zillion hiding places in there! Luckily the bug isn't making noise very often and doesn't seem to be wandering around. I'm contemplating closing the doors and praying that it dies before Jay gets back on Saturday morning. Otherwise he's going to have a hunt on his hands! I know I should close the doors, but to do so I'll have to venture into the room a little, and I'm so not into that idea right now. OK, here goes nothing............EWWWWW!!!! No bug sighting, but that was awful. There was stuff by the doors, so it wasn't an easy thing to do. There's a sizeable crack under the doors, so if the thing is smart it'll just walk out and into the rest of the house. God help me...

Update: Claire came back right after I posted this and suggested putting a towel along the floor, so for now the bug is trapped. Hopefully it will die soon...

MAJOR oops!

With all of my recent organizing/cleaning endeavors, I finally have set up my laptop on my desk in the living room instead of in the kitchen. An unfortunate turn of events, as it turns out.

Tonight I decided to do some cooking for Kate - some carrots, squash, and lentils (my first time cooking beans!). The carrots were done, the lentils were cooking, and I was stumped trying to figure out how to end up with cubed squash. I've always roasted squash halves with the skin still on, but I'd like there to be cubes for Kate to eat with her hands - how in the world do you peel a squash without inflicting bodily harm? Off to the Internet. I found this cool trick that involves boiling the squash for a couple of minutes to loosen the skin, so I put a pot of water on to boil and then went back to my computer to do a few things. A few minutes later I'm faintly smelling something, but I'm in the middle of reading Claire's post, so I subconsciously ignore the smell. When I'm in the middle of posting a comment, I think, what the heck is that? I'm assuming it's the beans - after all, I have no idea what I'm doing, and they've been cooking for a while. I walk into a totally hazy kitchen where I find a half melted plastic spoon! AUGH! I had turned on the wrong burner for the water (total rookie mistake), and the handle of a stirring spoon was in contact with the incorrect burner. Yeah, so my house is filled with plastic fumes, I have ruined a favorite spoon, and there is plastic melted onto my cooking surface (I'm all ears for suggestions about that issue!). I turned off the burner, moved the spoon (which somehow caused the plastic on the stove to actually catch on fire for a few moments), and proceeded to open all of our windows. The fumes rose upstairs, but Kate's room seems untainted - luckily her door is closed. I pulled our fans out of the basement and cranked up the ceiling fans. At this point the rooms are no longer hazy but the fumes still are inhabiting my body - great, what nasty chemicals do you think I've inhaled tonight? Ugh, what a stinky, stupid (not to mention slightly panic-inducing) situation!

On a positive note, I just checked the lentils and they're perfect, so we'll see what Kate thinks of them. They'll need to be mixed with something, I think. I also remembered this evening that I own a steamer for our pots - something I could totally have been using for the last 5 months cooking for Kate! What a goof I am...

OK, that's all for now. I'm off to peel a squash...

8 hours later...

Yup, that's right, I haven't touched my computer since I posted that entry 8 hours ago. Now I'm just on for a quick post and then a few Internet errands, then I'm off again.

So, the jogging stroller. I felt like it wouldn't be too unreasonable if I could find one on Craig's List, so I did! The stroller has never been used and is only 7 months old, and I got it for $100 (vs. $250 retail), so I'm feeling pretty good about it. Kate seems to like it, and it's very nice to push. An unplanned perk of it is that it's great for Jay - he's 6' tall, and our pink stroller is pretty uncomfortable for him to use. The handle is low and there isn't much room for his stride. This jogging stroller has an adjustable height handle and is meant for runners, so there's tons of room for long strides. He was pretty happy with it, I think, on our walk up to the playground yesterday. I'm not sure if I'll ever actually jog behind it, but I do think it will get a lot of use, so I'm pretty happy about it.

Kate's almost 11 months old, which means she's almost a year old! Holy cow! I'm starting to think about weaning, and I have to admit that I can't wait! Sure, I'll miss our little games and that quiet time together, but there's so little of it now anyway that I'm just ready for us both to move on. She had already eliminated her bedtime nursing but I've added a bottle at bedtime for the time being - she was waking up between 5 and 5:30 to nurse and then go back to bed, but after filling her up last night with a bottle she slept until 6:45 this morning. Much better! I'll use up our frozen milk that way, and then we'll move over to cow's milk. I gave her a sip of mine the other night and she kept wanting more, so hopefully she'll like it ok. Anyway, it's amazing that I'm already thinking about this; the time has gone by so fast. A couple of months ago I didn't think I'd make it until she was a year old, so I'm feeling pretty good that everything has worked out.

Alright, I have things to do, so I'm off again. Hope everyone had a nice long weekend!

so many things, so little time

Isn't that always the problem? I've been really struggling to do all the things that I want and need to do lately, hence my virtually complete absence from my computer. I'm barely even checking email these days! So, I have a new plan, at least with regards to blogging, because I know there are a couple of you out there that are going to be rioting soon if I don't get on it. I'm setting a timer - 10 min - whenever I sit down at my computer, and that will be 3 times each day. That 10min is mine to use as I wish without guilt about the other things I should be doing, but it will also prevent me from getting sucked into the Internet abyss. That's been the real reason I haven't been on my computer at all - I always end up staying for way longer than I should.

OK, so that's the plan. Now to make use of the time...

Labor Day weekend was pretty mellow around here. Jay and I were kicking ourselves yesterday for not having a least a small bbq (Claire's family, at least), but what are you going to do. It was a relaxed weekend, and Jay and I both got a lot done around the house. Claire and I hung out a little - last night we had a private screening of Harry Potter (we HAD to see it before it leaves the theaters!) - and I had a bunch of time to myself, which I always appreciate. I finally got my files organized and I'm just about done with all of the remaining house clean up and organization that needed to be tackled. I just hate that stuff, but I hate having crap laying around even more! So, that all feels pretty good. The toy bins that I'd been eyeing at Target are on sale now, so I got it and set it up - it's great. Kate loves pulling the toys out of it, it looks cute, and it's easy to keep the room clean now. (I know I owe you pics of the house - soon, I promise.) We moved one of the loveseats down to the rec room yesterday. We had been intending to get a sofa for down there, but I was really starting to have issues spending any money on such a purchase, even if it was on a used couch. The loveseat is great - it looks good, it serves the purpose, and Jay is happy. It also opens up the family room/play room so that Kate has a ton of space again. Very good, all around.

Instead of spending money on a couch I bought a stroller. *lol* I'd been thinking about a jogging stroller ever since Kate was really little, but never thought I could justify it. I take decent (that is, fast paced) walks with Kate, and we do it at least 4 times a week, but it still seemed unnecessary. On Thursday we walked over to Claire's - it was hotter than heck, and I hauled butt - and after getting home I started to think that really it might be reasonable at this point to get one. When Claire later mentioned that she thought we should walk together for exercise, I was convinced. Oops, there's the timer - gotta go, I'll be back later.
