waiting, waiting...

Kate is in the middle (actually, hopefully ending) of a really long nap. I'm not complaining, but we're going out once she wakes up, so I'm waiting, waiting...

This weekend ended up being just as much fun as I thought it would be. Brunch yesterday morning was so fun. We have four really cute kids! Jillian and Taylor are almost 9 months old, and the last time we saw them they were 5 1/2 months old - what a huge difference! It got Jay and I pretty excited about Kate being older. Watching Taylor wave and clap...Taylor is in the pink outfit, and Jillian has on green (and is super flexible!).

They have gotten so big - it's amazing. Tyler is still a total sweetheart - what a darling little boy. He was a little interested in the babies, but he's still a baby himself, really (almost 18 months old). Peek-a-boo was a lot of fun:

I was hoping to try for a photo of all 4 kids together, but timing of naps and brunch just didn't work out. I'm hopeful (although honestly doubtful) that the kids will be in the same place again before we move...

I added some pictures that Peter took of Kate to the photo album.

many tangents to come

On Friday Claire and I were talking about knitting, and we were both saying how we haven't knit in awhile now and don't feel particularly inspired project-wise at the moment. We were discussing it because I found a long-lost $50 gift card to a yarn shop this week when I was cleaning out my desk. It was a fun discovery, but in my experience just buying yarn for an unknown project doesn't go very well. Anyway, Claire and I decided that what I should do is go indulge and beef up my supplies - needles, row counters, tip protectors, the works. That night I was thinking, wait a minute. Claire and I are going to be able to borrow each others things now without a second thought (the realization made me almost giddy) - does it really make a lot of sense to have a vast collection of my own? Yesterday on my way to the knitting seminar I realized that we hadn't even considered the possibility of buying pattern books or technique books - things that are much more expensive and unlikely to be bought. So, that's what I think I'm going to do - I may buy a few accessories, but I think books are a better option. And, those are things that Claire can really borrow, so I'll need to see what books she already has so that I don't duplicate. I had totally given up on ever finding this gift card - it disappeared shortly after I received in the summer of '05. Apparently in a fit of organization I filed it away and never could find it again..

So while I'm talking about knitting (it's been a long time, hasn't it?) - my stripes seminar yesterday was terrific! Not only did I learn how to knit in the ends when you change colors (I'll teach you Claire, and you can make that blanket again!) and how to carry yarn up the side, but I also found a pattern book that I really want. The best part was that the teacher spent the first 10 minutes talking about picking colors and showed us these great color resources, so I think I'm going to get myself one of those (probably not with the gift card as they're not really knitting-specific). Picking out a set of colors is so challenging - it's easy to pick colors that go together, but adding a color that 'pops' the whole thing is a real trick. I also figure that having a color wheel could be useful for future interior decorating...Anyway, the seminar was great. I came home totally excited to start up my knitting again. I still have to finish Molly's sweater, and I'm vowing to actually do that soon (in all my free time prepping to move nearly 3,000 miles).

I keep thinking of random things that happen in my life, and then I think - Claire could help me with that, or Claire has the stuff I need to do that, or I could ask Claire to babysit Kate while I did that, or (my favorite) Claire can help me shop for that. I cannot wait to be able to just hang out with my sister! We've never had that opportunity - before I left for college we were just kids, so that doesn't really count, and I moved to CA a month after my Cornell graduation and have been out west ever since. This is really going to be a whole new thing for us. Jay and I are thrilled to have the cousins grow up together, but for me the best part is being near Claire. YAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

see that cat?

It's getting out of the bag...We're moving to D.C.!!! (and I bet you thought I was going to write about Kate!) It's been killing me to not talk about this, but there were some people at work that Jay wanted to tell in person, so he asked Claire and I to hold off on discussing it. Talk about holding my tongue - it's been like last year when I didn't write about being pregnant early on!

So, how about them apples? We're really moving. And, not only are we moving, but we're moving at the end of May!!! HOLY CRAP! It's been a wild couple of weeks, let me tell you. You may have noticed before we went back east a few weeks ago that there was a campaign afoot (spearheaded by my darling sister) to have us move to the D.C. area. I had forewarned Jay about it, and we had very briefly discussed it before the trip. Now, this is a story that he'll never live down...On the plane to NY he said to me, I don't want to have to deal with 2 weeks of pressure from your family. Regardless of Microsoft, I need you to know that I'm 100% committed to Seattle. He was really peeved that there might be any pressure from my family, so I reassured him (Jay rarely gets peeved, so I knew it was serious). That was Monday afternoon. Claire and her family arrived Tuesday afternoon, and Wednesday morning he said, we need to move. As you can imagine, my jaw just dropped. We really hadn't seriously discussed the possibility, but he knew that I was all for it, and seeing the kids together just put him over the line. That sounds really rash, but we talked it through (and through, and through...) and he was certain. What fun!

So, since that conversation there have been a bazillion others. I'll spare you all of the back and forth, up and down, but suffice it to say that we decided to hightail it out of town, and Jay will continue to work for Microsoft. We wouldn't leave so soon but our lease is up on the house at the end of May, and we were already planning on moving to an apartment in Bellevue (to reduce Jay's commute) until the spring. So, once we had decided to move we figured - why rent somewhere else? Also, I'm really looking for my career to get off the ground, so just killing time in Seattle is totally unappealing to us.

It's been so chaotic around here for the last few weeks, mostly because the logistics of the move still aren't definite. There's a possibility that Microsoft is going to relocate us, and in that event life is really straightforward (moving van, cars get shipped, temporary housing). If that doesn't work out, then we need to pack and get across the country ourselves. In that event we'll use PODS for the move and drive...you can probably guess what we're hoping for!

The D.C. metro area is pretty large, and commuting is an enormous consideration for choosing where to live. Claire (and her family, of course) is the reason that we're moving to that area, so we'd like to be somewhat close to her. We'll have to balance it all out, and it's really hard to figure all of that out when we don't know the area and we're thousands of miles away. The atlas has been open to Virginia for over a week now...

So, that's the news. Big, huh? We're really excited to move closer to all of our family (Jay's mom: 5 hour drive, my parents: 7 hour drive, Claire: <30 min drive!), and the more we talk about it the more excited we get. We're very sad to leave our Seattle friends - after all, we've been here almost 7 years - and we know that we'll make trips out to visit. As much as we love Seattle (and we really do), we love our families a whole lot more. YAY!!!

almost May!

Yikes, what a scary thought...

Kate finally finished up the hearing study today. Four trips to the university...but $85 wasn't too bad. Besides, we contributed toward a grad student's PhD, and that made me feel good. Today was Kate's worst day - she did pretty well the other three times - but the researcher said that she was able to get one good data point, so I guess it was alright. Anyway, no more morning trips to UW.

Today we're actually planning an afternoon trip to the U to visit my lab. I just put Kate down for a nap in the hope that she'll be up around 2...we'll see.

This weekend should be fun. Tomorrow morning I'm going to the spa! Jay got me a massage and manicure package for my birthday, so I'm doing that tomorrow. Tomorrow afternoon I am going to my yarn store for a little class about stripes, and then in the evening we're going over to a friend's for a bbq. Sunday morning Carmen is having us over for brunch with Allison (I can't wait to see all the kids together!), and then Sunday afternoon I have soccer. I'll probably play at least a little bit of the game. My knee is sore but definitely not seriously injured. So, a busy but fun weekend. I think the weather tomorrow is supposed to be decent, but not on Sunday. It's really cooled off recently - 60 isn't so bad, but 70 is so much better! If the sun was out more it would seem nicer...

OK, just a quick post. I added more pics!

smarter everyday

Kate is at an amazing age. Everyday she's doing something new, I swear. She has this 'activity triangle' - it has a bunch of sides (3 and then a top and bottom) that all have little toys to spin or slide or twist. You get the idea. She's had it for about two months now, and has always liked it. In the last few days I've noticed that she plays with it differently. She picks it up, looks at it pretty seriously, then turns it to a side that she's picked out, and starts to play with that side. Today I watched her spin this little wheel down its track and my mouth just fell open. Her play has gotten so...deliberate, I guess. She lets you know when she wants a toy back, and she dives for everything now. I keep laughing at her, because here she is, an expert sitter (it's been almost 2 months now), and she's falling over all the time. She's constantly trying to get things that are out of her reach. Most of the time she twists on the way down to end up on her tummy, and then she wriggles around a bit before she eventually rolls over. She can't make much forward progress, but she definitely can spin in place on her tummy (not intentionally, I don't think). It's so cute to watch her fling herself around. She seems to strategize about everything, and that's what's been so amazing to watch. She's so cute!

Today was avocado day.  (That's for you, Aunt Carol!) She loved them! I fork mashed a ripe avocado, froze down a bunch of it, and then she had avocado, sweet potatoes, and oatmeal for lunch. She totally chowed down! It was by far the largest meal she's had to this point, and I'm starting to think that it might be time to have two meals a day. Oh, and by the way, she LOVED the sweet potatoes - I wasn't sure of her opinion when she first had them, but they were her first foray into solids. I wasn't sure how to interpret her faces. Now that she's understanding how it all works, you should have seen her opening her mouth in anticipation of more. I'm sure I could have given her more, but I don't want to force feed her. A gradual increase in volume seems to be the best approach. She hasn't cut back on nursing at all yet, so I guess she's just taking in more calories. We'll see what she looks like after a month of solids! *lol* Claire made a crack about her eating avocados all the time, what with all of their (healthy) fat. I'm sure she'll be a chubby, chubby girl here pretty quick. (I don't think she'll outdo Molly, though. I was looking at pics of that baby when she was here at almost 8 months - man, that girl was huge!) Maybe Kate will start crawling soon and will thin out a bit. I'm certainly not complaining - I love her chub, and I can't wait to see it all hang out in her summer clothes!

OK, off to eat dinner...

stupid cavities

I just got home from the dentist - yucko! I haven't had cavities since I was a kid, and at my appt in March they found 6 (!) on my X-rays. They're all in between my teeth...Anyway, this morning the doc filled the left side. I've never had Novacaine before, but he recommended it, so here I am, gimpy knee and gimpy lip. *lol* It really worked, that's for sure. The drilling was only unpleasant because of the smell...ew. And of course the fillings feel totally strange. I have to go back in a week and a half to have the other half done. People always complain about the Novacaine shots, but he used a topical treatment to numb my gum before the shots, so I didn't even feel them - and I closed my eyes so I didn't have to see the needle. Yuck.

Kate's napping right now, and I hope my crooked smile doesn't freak her out too much when she gets up...

Yesterday ended up being fine. We went in for the hearing study again, and then hit the grocery store after that. Avocados and mangoes were super cheap, so those are ripening until Kate is ready to chow down. The weather was gorgeous, so we sat on a blanket in the grass for a good half hour in the afternoon. I never did see Kate roll over from her back to belly - maybe today I'll work harder on encouraging it. I guess we don't really have plans for today - how boring. It's pretty wet outside, and with my knee we can't go for a walk anyway. Maybe today will just be laidback around the house.
2007/4/23

sigh...

Jay went back to work today for the first time in 4 weeks...I think poor little Kate is going to miss him tons - she sure loves her Daddy! I know poor Megan is definitely going to miss having a second parent around - back to the role as sole entertainer and adult...

The whole thing stinks even more because I got hurt in my soccer game yesterday - in the first 2 minutes I collided (very gently) with someone and something happened to my knee. No, I didn't hear anything, as people keep asking, and I'm sure nothing is torn because there was never any intense pain, just kind of a numbness. I can walk, but I definitely limp; I have to go up/down stairs with one leg; getting up and down off the floor is quite challenging. It just hurts to bend it very much...I'm so annoyed. I'm hopeful, though, that a few days of rest (and ice and Advil) will really help out.

Other than the injury, it was a great weekend. Mike and Melinda came over Saturday afternoon/evening, and we had a really great time. Kate was in a strange mood, unfortunately, so putting her to bed was trickier than normal, but overall it was ok. Yesterday Jay's friend Mark was in town and stopped by for a while. Then I had soccer. Then Carmen, Allison, and I met for a yummy Mexican dinner - it was good to see my girls! It's been way too long, and thankfully Kate doesn't mind in the least if Jay does the bath/bed routine so I didn't have to worry at all. So it was a fun weekend, and the weather was nice to boot.

I had mentioned that I was thinking of giving Kate bananas, but then there's the issue with bananas bulking up her poo - and the oatmeal was already having that effect. Peaches are a great suggestion, but they're totally unavailable to us right now. Pears are around, and I'm sure they work well, but I've never made 'pearsauce,' so I decided to stick with applesauce. I chopped up two apples, threw them in the microwave for 2 min and then put them in the blender - I swear that I made apple custard! It was SO smooth. Anyway, Kate LOVED it. So she had apples and half of her normal oatmeal serving. We've been feeding her about 2 hours after she nurses (that's an hour before she'll want to nurse again), and it's clear now that her meal tides her over - she generally goes two hours after the solids before nursing again. So this whole food thing is pretty fun, and I'm going to start up-ing the volume she takes in. She gets pretty into it, so I think if the timing is right I could really fill her up. I think avocados will be next (on Thursday) - they're pretty expensive, but one avocado is a lot of servings, and I'll just freeze it like I have everything else.

Jay got up with Kate this morning and she rolled from her back to her tummy three times! We knew that it was going to be soon - her twisting has gotten more and more extreme in the last few days. I guess he cleared the blanket of her toys and then put one out of her reach. She rolled over to her tummy, got the toy, and then rolled back to her back. What a big baby! Our days with an immobile child are very limited - probably another month of so...

OK, I need to do a few things while she naps. Have a good one!

a diaper crusade

I've been meaning to write about Kate's diapers for, literally, months now. I just have never gotten around to it. So, let me start by saying that WE LOVE HER DIAPERS! Using cloth diapers has been one of the best decisions we made in getting ready for a baby. Man, they're great. I took a couple of pictures of her in them in December, at ~2 months old...

Man, that picture is funny! The diaper looks enormous on her...actually, I think I have a more recent one (you've probably seen it)...

So, let me explain these diapers. First, they have a velcro closure, so they're super-adjustable at the waist. The legs are elastic, so they also fit really well. The outside of the diaper is kind of a plasticky material, and is waterproof. The diaper itself is two pieces - an absorbent insert and the liner that touches Kate's cute tushy. This style is called a "pocket diaper." There are many pocket diapers on the market, but I particularly love ours. They're called Bum Genius! (by Cotton Babies). I like them because they are a "one size" diaper - that diaper that Kate had on at 8 weeks will be the same one that she'll wear until she's potty trained! The diaper has three rise settings so that the diaper can grow with her (Claire put one on Molly to verify that they fit 2 years olds). This makes these diapers a very economical choice! They are individually expensive ($18), but over the course of 2 years...not too shabby, huh?

The laundry issue has been a total non-issue. We have 20 diapers (too many, actually), and we do laundry every four days. It takes a couple of hours because they need to soak before the wash and then we give them an extra rinse after the wash. Really, though, it's so not an issue.

We love our diapers - they're so nice and soft for Kate, and it's SO nice to not be contributing to landfills! There is another popular pocket diaper, called Fuzzi Bunz, but they are sized so that you have to buy more as your baby outgrows them - for pretty much the exact same product, why not use the one size version? So, I have been spreading the word. Microsoft has employees that they call "evangelists" that are cheerleaders for products - I consider myself a Bum Genius! evangelist.  I always keep an extra one in my diaper bag in case someone wants to see it. I got my mom's support group interested, and two of them have started using them. At our childbirth class reunion I talked about them, and one of those babies is now in them. I've been proud of those conversions, but the best is yet to come!

About 6 weeks ago Kate and I bumped into Meghan and Owen at a local baby store. They carry traditional cloth diapers, and I had stopped in to buy a hemp insert for Kate to use overnight. So, I pulled out my diaper to check if the insert would fit. Meghan exclaimed to the salesperson - if you ever carry these, I'll buy them! She left the store, and the salesperson examined the diaper inside and out. She called her manager at home and told her all about them. I left, amused that the store was interested, and never thought about it again. After seeing Kate yesterday Meghan was reminded that she wanted to try these diapers. She called the store today, and they've started carrying them! The sales person told her that a customer had come in with them and had showed them to her - Meghan said, yeah, that was my friend Megan!  I love this!!!

Jay and I were just talking about how different our lives are because of these diapers. Why, you ask? Well, we've only have ONE poopy blow out diaper in the last 6 1/2 months! Just ask any disposable-using mom how much time she spends soaking and scrubbing clothes, and you'll be amazed. The whole idea of having back up outfits...it's never been an issue for us - except for when we traveled and used the stupid disposables!

Anyway, I  Kate's diapers!!!

Friday!

And what a beautiful Friday it was...we have had the most gorgeous weather this week. I love spring!

Over the last few days I've added a bunch of photos, and I just went back through them to see what stories I have to tell...

On Wednesday Kate apparently realized that her tongue can rest in between her lips. She barely smiled all day because she had the tip of her tongue protruding for hours on end. It was hysterical! So that explains that picture. We also introduced oatmeal cereal on Wednesday, and she LOVES it - she totally chows down on it. It's a bit messier than the sweet potatoes, but it's been fun. Now that it's almost a week of solids she's really getting the hang of it - she opens her mouth wide for the spoon, and she swallows most of her mouthful. Sunday we'll give her bananas, I think. The pediatrician chided us for not giving her cereal first because of her need for iron, so that's why she got the oatmeal second.

Yesterday Jay, Kate, and I went to the pool. She loved it, and we were in the water for a little over 30 minutes. She's so freakin' cute in her swimsuit! Man, oh man. That was a fun little outing. This morning she took part in a hearing study at the UW, and after that we went to visit Meghan and Owen - we haven't seen them since February! We took a nice walk and had a yummy lunch together, and it was great to catch up with them. Owen is a big guy - he's over 17lbs at 4 months! Considering Kate is 18lbs and 2 months older...he is a boy, though, so that is part of the difference. Anyway, he's so cute. They had fun looking at each other, and Kate really wanted to grab his ears. *lol*

Kate got onto a roll - literally - this afternoon. Out of nowhere she started rolling to her back from her belly over her left shoulder - a new direction. The funniest part was that it was constant: we could barely get her centered on her tummy before she'd roll again. It was hysterical, and it went on for a good 15 minutes or so. We'll see if it continues - after she figured out how to roll the first time she went on a hiatus for a good 6 weeks or so. Been there, done that, I guess. She's getting close to rolling from her back to her belly, so we'll see when that happens for real.

This weekend is going to be busy and fun. Lots of friends to see and things to do. Hopefully the weather will continue to be great!

still perfect

We just got home from Kate's six month check up. She's a very healthy baby, right on track for everything the doctor cared about. She is 26 inches tall (50-75%) and 18 pounds (75-90%) - what a chub! Her head isn't small anymore, it's right at 50%, so I guess it's just average now. Darn, I kind of liked that she had a small head. No matter. She had 5 vaccinations in three shots (yay for combinations!), and they went really well. Her chubby thighs are really ticklish, so as the nurse was squeezing her leg before the needle Kate started laughing - how sad to go from ticklish to pain in an instant. She just cried momentarily - it was not a reenactment of her 4 month shots, thank goodness. God that was awful...anyway, she was due to take a nap now, so she's sleeping and I'll bet she sleeps for a bit longer than normal. So, nothing too exciting to report. Just a healthy baby - exactly the way we like her! She showed off her sitting on the exam table and was grabbing for everything - the doc liked that. She's just too cute to resist, when it comes down to it (in my totally unbiased opinion, of course).

I've been adding photos to the album, so keep checking them out...

throwing off our routine

Kate's sleeping through the night has continued, thankfully. About a month ago she was going to bed at 7 and waking for the day between 6:15 and 7, generally around 6:30. When we were in NY that wake up time shifted back to 6:00 pretty much everyday - it doesn't sound like a huge difference, 30 minutes, but it was a little bit like, what is going on? I chalked it up to the travel. WRONG! Since we've been home the little twit has shifted even earlier, so that now she gets up by 5:30 everyday - sometimes it's even 5:00! AY! This is freakin' early! It hasn't been too bad so far because Jay is home for his parental leave. Our routine is that he gets up with her (I nurse her when she's ready) until her first nap (which is now starting around 7:00, how goofy!). Then he goes back to bed for a bit and I get up and shower, etc. so that I'm ready when she gets up again. Needless to say, we're both going to bed a bit earlier than normal to adapt to this. That's caused problems with the dream feed; I'm certain that the later the dream feed is the longer her night is, but if I'm tired and want to go to bed at 9:30, she's not going to sleep late the next day. I had been feeding her around 10:30, but I can't stay up that late with the new schedule. I keep planning on going to bed and getting up to feed her in that timeframe, but the other problem is that she's been waking up between 9 and 9:45 most nights. Some nights she just wants to eat - bye bye 10:30 dream feed - and some nights she's just awake and wants to be up with us. Those nights we make her hang out with us quietly, and within about 20-30 min she's ready to go back to sleep. That happened last night - she woke up at 9:45 and we got her out of her crib a little after 10. She was back asleep at 10:30, but I couldn't give her a dream feed at that point because she wasn't hungry and would have been too awake to just eat regardless. So I went to bed and figured that whenever she woke up I'd feed her - that was at 2:30. Not surprisingly, she slept until almost 6 this morning. Actually, I don't know if she slept in because of the later feeding or because she was up for a little while last night...either way, it's been a very sleepy morning for her. I know we shouldn't be getting her up when she wakes up, but she won't sleep, and she gets upset in her crib...If anyone has ideas, I'm all ears!

Anyway, you can see that right now our routine is pretty much up in the air. I'll definitely be asking her doc about all of this tomorrow. Yes, that's right, tomorrow is her 6 month check up. I can't wait to get her stats! I think she'll be pushing 19 lbs...what a chub!  Of course there are a slew of shots as well - poor kid.

Kate ate all of her sweet potatoes yesterday - she's pretty good at opening her mouth up really wide when she sees the spoon coming. It's so cute...we still cannot find our camcorder charger, and it isn't in NY apparently. What the heck happened to it?? The bag it was in was searched by TSA, but I'd be surprised if that was the explanation. I'd hate to have to buy a new one, but having a dead camcorder doesn't make any sense. The search continues...

Speaking of baggage, tell me if you think this is weird. We checked Kate's carseat under the plane in Rochester. My mom had some really big, thick garbage bags that it fit in perfectly. The baggage sticker was on the outside of it, and off it went. When we got to Seattle the carseat was there, but completely out of the bag! There weren't any identifying labels on it, so I think we're lucky to have picked it up before someone snagged it. What the heck happened to the bag? Remember, we had two layovers, so our bags really got passed around. It doesn't make sense to me that the bag came off before or at Philly, because then the seat wouldn't have made the Vegas/Seattle connection. So either the crew in Vegas took it off or the crew in Seattle did. What the hell? Was there some issue with the bag? Clearly there wasn't because it wouldn't have been accepted in the first place. It pissed me off a bit - the seat cover is dirty now, so I need to wash it. The seat is brand new! If it had gotten lost or stolen I would have been really PO'ed, and there was no way for it to be tracked in the system since all of our identifying info was on that bag. Luckily it worked out ok, but it did tell me that you need to put a luggage tag on the strap of the seat for this kind of situation. So strange.

OK, I should go clean a bit while the kid keeps napping. Ciao!

food for the babe

Yesterday we all went to our First Foods seminar, and when we got home Kate had her first table food! I had baked a sweet potato Friday evening, pureed and strained it, and then frozen it down in an ice cube tray. So after Kate's nap we took off her white jumper  and she started eating. I don't know if she liked it per se, but she got the hang of the spoon - she'd open up really wide when she saw it coming. Very cute. It actually wasn't nearly as messy as I'd expected it to be - I guess that was because I was feeding her rather than her feeding herself. I'm so excited to be giving her real food! She'll have only sweet potatoes for 4 days, and then we need to decide what the next food will be. I'm leaning toward banana...

I posted a very short video of her eating. Unfortunately our video camera's battery died as Jay was moving the video to his computer, and we can't find the charger (Meim, could you check under your living room furniture for it?). So, only a small bit of the video was captured, and that's what I'm sharing. I'm also going to start her 7th month album, and I'll put the photos in there.

back in the groove

We got home, safe and sound, after a long day of travel on Tuesday. Our three plane trip pretty much sucked in all ways - being cooped up in a stuffy plane with a six month old for a total of 12 hours was bound to be unpleasant, and it was. That said, Kate did really well. She had a few crying fits that lasted a few minutes more than I would have liked, but considering the circumstances, she proved again that she's an excellent traveler. Her congestion was only very mild, and she didn't have any problems taking off and landing, so that was a relief. Her biggest problem was that she was just so tired. She did ok until we crossed into the after-bedtime timeframe. The last two hours of the Philly-Vegas flight and the beginning of the Vegas-Seattle flight were a little rocky. And then, the poor kid, the landing in Seattle wakes her up - it's now 2:30am to our bodies - and she just couldn't take it anymore. She just cried and cried while we headed to the gate. She was a very patient girl.

Her mommy, on the other hand, had a few very unpatient moments. I get so hot on planes, and having a baby on my lap makes things nearly intolerable. On the Philly-Vegas trip I thought I might just go crazy. It was a 5 1/2 hour flight, and we got drinks twice - and there were 3 hours between those servings! We had bottled water with us (thank God!), but it wasn't cold, and I was just burning up. So Kate's few overtired crying sessions really didn't sit well with me. On top of that she chose to, yet again, produce voluminous poopy diapers on the planes - not the easiest environment to deal with that, really. Of course we were also so tired - like I said, it was 2:30am to our bodies by the time we landed. It was a long day. We got back to our house at 12:45 our time, and obviously we all just crashed into our beds.

Luckily, because Kate was so shortchanged on sleep she slept really well Tuesday night and got up at 5:30 yesterday morning. Don't get me wrong, I had no interest in getting up that early, but she'd been getting up at 6:00 on the trip, and I was terrified that she'd wake up at 3am - luckily that didn't happen. She slept a lot yesterday and went to bed at 7, so that was good. This morning was another 5:30 wake up, but I really can't complain too much about that. Hopefully she'll be totally back on schedule by tomorrow. Jay and I are feeling more caught up on sleep today, but I'm sure tonight will be another early one for both of us.

I've pretty much unpacked, and I did Kate's laundry yesterday. We'll do ours today, and I think I'll make a trip to the grocery store today as well. This afternoon the three of us are going to go to a local (huge) park to admire the azaleas and rhododendrons in the nice weather. It's good to be home! I miss my family already, but it is nice to be back to normal life.

just to complicate matters

I apparently caught a cold when we were in Rochester (Claire, did any of you get it?), and Monday evening it started. Tuesday was pretty messy, but by Thursday I was feeling a whole lot better. Yesterday, Kate got it! UGH. I had two much worse colds earlier in the year, and she didn't get those, but this mild one she goes and catches when we're not at home and planning to fly back soon??? UGH. Her congestion actually isn't too bad, and she did ok overnight. Today seems to be like yesterday, so maybe (*fingers crossed*) it won't get much worse. She's been great on all of our flights so far, but I can only expect so much from a 6 month(!) old when she's not feeling well...maybe it'll just magically go away...for now, though, we've got a messy, snotty baby on our hands.

So tomorrow we drive out of here and head back to Rochester. I think I'm going to get us at least half packed today so that tomorrow morning I  can still visit before starting out. We got more than a few gifts for Kate, and while I made sure we had some extra room, I'm a little concerned about getting everything home. I'll work my magic and hope for the best, I guess.

Kate is 6 months old today!

the big 3-0

Happy birthday to me, happy birthday to me...I'm 30! Yikes!!! Really, it doesn't bother me too much...yet...

Jay, Kate, and I are still in NY, and I decided that it was high time that I got on to say howdy to everyone. Our trip has been fantastic, and we're enjoying our last few days here. We're currently at Jay's mom's place, and then Sunday we'll drive back to Rochester to my mom's. We fly out Tuesday afternoon. It's been a long time since we were home, and I think it's going to be a little strange to get back to normal life.

So, our trip. Rochester was so much fun. It was great to see Claire and her family - the girls are so big! They're both quite cute, I have to say. Anna was...tempermental, but hopefully that's just going to be a short phase. When she left on Sunday she was mad at me for taking away her balloon earlier on, so she didn't say goodbye. That was kind of sad, but what are you going to do? Hopefully she'll have forgotten about the balloon by the next time I see her - I'd hate for her to think her Aunt Megan is mean forever! Anna and Molly didn't pay a lot of attention to Kate - in fact, they paid almost exactly no attention to her! *lol* Still, it was cute to see them in the same place, and we did manage to get some pics of all of them (I'll post them when I'm home). Of course, seeing Claire, my mom, and my dad was fantastic. We also got to see my girlfriends from high school, and that was also fun.

We went to Cornell on the way from Rochester to New Windsor, and we had a great visit with Jay's profs. Oh, and I got my new sweatshirt! The drive to New Windsor was boring but uneventful, and luckily Kate slept nearly the entire time - 5 1/2 hours all told, and probably almost 5 asleep! Hopefully the drive back on Sunday will also be easy, but I doubt we'll have that kind of sleep performance again.

Tuesday evening one of my college roommates and her husband came over for dinner, and that was a treat. Lex got to meet Kate, and it was good to catch up with her. Last night one of Jay's friend from high school came over, so that was fun. Tomorrow we're going to visit a friend from Cornell, and Saturday a group of Jay's friends are hosting a gathering for us. It's a fun visit. Of course, Pat is thrilled with Kate. After all, isn't she darling?

OK, that's it for now. I'll try to post photos soon.
